Isla Jones
BIOGRAPHY
Isla Jones (b.1997, Northumberland, England) is a London-based artist working with drawing, painting and printmaking.
In Isla's work, ideas about identity and connection are investigated through vivid folkloric narratives and fictional landscapes. Much of her work is informed by her upbringing in rural Northumberland; this manifests as not only a reflection of place, but also as an exploration of the mythic transformation of memory. Working from traditional folklore, as well as stories that emerge from personal experiences and collective imaginings, the work exists in the space between fiction and reality. Depictions of symbolic landscapes and the rituals that exist within them make space for the body to be depicted unusually, often characterised by a sense of transformation, fragmentation and distortion.
Isla approaches the act of mark-making as a ritual in itself, honouring time and meticulousness as an important part of her making process. Much of her approach closely aligns with traditional craft practices - slow-growing, rhythmic, and meditative - where repetition and patience are prioritised.
