Isobel Plent Das Gupta
BIOGRAPHY
Isobel Plent Das Gupta (born 1992, London) is a visual artist living and working in London. She studied History at The University of Bristol (2014) and completed The Drawing Year at the Royal Drawing School in 2021.
Isobel uses stories, in their many forms, as a lens through which to contemplate what we value and desire. Working across painting, drawing and printmaking, she uses stories in her search for a language that can convey her thoughts and feelings, however transient, on ideas of love, landscape, transcendence and relationships. In particular, our relationships with the living world and each other, and the different ways in which these are expressed and represented through time.
Working with an array of materials ranging from ink to oil paint, on a variety of surfaces including canvas and wood panels, she is intrigued by the distinct materiality of each, which lends itself to different processes and challenges. With printmaking, there is a shift that occurs between the initial painted plate and the final printed image, a mutation into a less familiar space, in the form of textures, marks or feeling. It is a discovery she has begun to evolve and deploy, a deliberate ‘wrong footing’ of sorts, in her painting practice.
